Chandigarh -The City Beautiful
This fall I traveled to India under the ITEC program. The course was held in the northern Indian city - Chandigarh. In this regard, I want to share my impressions and useful information about this city, in which I had to spend three unforgettable months.History and geography ...
In general, Chandigarh can hardly be called real India, because it is very different from most Indian cities. And the main reason for this is that the city did not arise as a result of long historical development, but was completely planned according to the project of the French architect Le Corbusier. The need to build a new capital city appeared when India gained independence in 1947, and the territory of Punjab was divided between India and Pakistan, and its capital, Lahore, became owned by Pakistan.
The construction of the city began in 1952. When designing new buildings, the principles of modern urban planning and architecture were combined with some traditional techniques of Indian architecture. Le Corbusier compared the design of the city with a living organism, where the head is legislation (sector 1); heart - city center (sector 17); lungs - Leisure Valley, numerous parks and gardens that are certainly present in every sector; intelligence - cultural and educational institutions; circulating systems - a network of wide roads; internal organs - industrial areas.
Chandigarh got its name from the temple of the Goddess Chandi, and the fortress ("garh") outside it, located near the place chosen for the construction of the city.
The city is located 250 km north of Delhi, covers an area of over 41 square km, located in the foothills of the Himalayas at an altitude of 365 m above sea level.
The population of the city exceeds 850 thousand people.
Chandigarh is the common administrative center for two states - Punjab and Harian, but at the same time is not included in any of them.
Smooth lines of streets the city is divided into sectors. Each sector is a rectangle of approximately 800 by 1200 m. Sectors do not have a specific name, but are named by number. The most interesting thing is that sector No. 13 in the city does not exist, it seems that India also does not have much trust in this number.
Each sector is a self-sufficient unit and includes both residential areas and public places - shopping streets, temples, parks.
Chandigarh breathes the spaciousness and verdure of wide streets that are “incredible” clean and quiet compared to other cities in India. With its thoughtful buildings and landscapes, it symbolizes modern India. And maybe this is why Chandigarh is among the most expensive cities in India in terms of living standards.
Sightseeing ...
One of Chandigarh's main attractions is the Rock Garden - Rock Garden (sector 1). Entrance is only 10 Rs. for adults, for foreign tourists There are no tariffs, which is very pleasing. The sculptor Nek Chand designed an amazing park where not only visitors, but also permanent residents of the city like to relax. Having strayed along paths and walkways, past waterfalls and intricate sculptures, the garden will lead you to a noisy square. There are always a lot of children, souvenir dealers, and on weekends there are holidays and festivals.
Open Hand - Open Hand (sector 1) - a monument that has become the official emblem of Chandigarh, symbolizes the credo of the city - “open to give, open to receive”.
Rose Garden(sector 16) - about 30 acres of beautiful landscapes are planted with more than 1,500 species of roses. The best time to visit this park, of course, in the spring months, when roses are filled with spring freshness, at this time there is a festival of roses. In summer, when there is unbearable heat, roses do not bloom, but in the fall, in October - November, they bloom again.
In sector 24, there is another garden of roses, although more modest in size, but the beauty of blooming roses is not inferior. People come here to sit in silence and in harmony with nature, chat with friends, work out or take a walk with children.
Happiness Lake - Sukhna Lake (sector 1) - an artificially created reservoir in a picturesque place, at the foot of the Shivalik hill. This is another very popular holiday destination in Chandigarh for residents and tourists. There are competitions in water sports such as rowing, yachting, water skiing.
And here you must definitely take a catamaran in the form of a swan and take a walk along the water surface.
Art Gallery - Art Gallery (Sector 10) - Amazing exhibits of art from ancient and modern India are housed here. Sculpture, painting, ornaments for fabrics, coins, fragments of ancient structures. In general, a lot of interesting things
